Sir Elton meets Malawian boy
Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish have again been foiled in their attempts to add to their family.
The pair found a child to adopt – this time in Malawi – only to learn he had several blood relatives.
Sir Elton recently said he never considered having kids until he met a Ukrainian boy, Lev, in an orphanage. Authorities in that country were initially opposed to the adoption on the grounds Sir Elton was too old and the couple is homosexual.
Sir Elton, 62, and Furnish, 46, went to Malawi and found a boy, only to discover he had a maternal grandmother and siblings. “We were in Africa for the [Sir Elton John] Aids Foundation and met a boy, and immediately thought about adopting him. When we found out he had a maternal grandmother, and brother and sister, we realised it wouldn’t be the right thing to take him away from the family he had there,” Furnish said.
“We would love to adopt Lev, but that does not seem possible under Ukrainian rules.”
Sir Elton has at least 10 godchildren, including the son of John Lennon, Sean, and the son of Elizabeth Hurley, Damian.
