Michael Jackson’s children spoke publicly for the first time since his memorial concert to pay him an emotional tribute at the Grammy Awards ceremony.
In the show’s most eagerly-awaited moment, Michael Jackson’s two oldest children – Prince Michael, 12, and Paris, 11 – took to the stage to a standing ovation from a crowd packed with the world’s most famous artists to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of their dad.
Looking visibly nervous and fidgeting as he held the gong, Prince Michael, in a black suit and tie, led the acceptance speech.
“We are proud to be here to accept this award on behalf of our father Michael Jackson,” he said, occasionally stuttering and breathing nervously.
“First of all we would like to thank God for watching over us for these past seven months and our grandpa and grandma for their love and support.
“Also we would like to thank you the fans. Our father loved you so much because you were always there for him.
“Our father was always concerned with the planet and humanity. Through all his hard work and dedication he has helped many charities and donated to all of them.
“Through all his songs, his message was simple: love. We will continue to spread his message and help the world. Thank you, we love you.”
His sister Paris, wearing a black suit with a Michael Jackson-esque flamboyant shirt, then took the microphone with a simple message.
“Daddy was supposed to be here,” she said. “Daddy was going to perform this year but couldn’t … Thank you, we love you daddy.”
